CYO Solo Competition

Open to CYO Symphony and Symphonic Ensembles
Location: Classical Academy High School - PLC
Preliminary Round: Saturday, February 22, 2025
Final Round: Saturday, March 1, 2025
IMPORTANT: Due to the difficulty of certain repertoire and accessibility of the music we have removed some pieces and movements from the competition. Please check our list of ineligible repertoire. All rental music is ineligible for the competition. If you have any questions about music selection for the competition please email civicyouthorchestra@gmail.com.
Rules:

Participant must submit a $35 entry fee prior to the competition. This fee helps cover the cost of the competition venue and judges we hire.

Participant's music selection must be approved by the conductor of their ensemble.

Participant must be a member of the CYO Symphony or Symphonic Orchestra to be eligible to enter the competition.

Participant must enter the competition on the instrument which they play in a CYO ensemble. Piano is not allowed.

Participant is expected to play a single-movement solo work that has orchestral accompaniment or a movement of a major concerto. (Please check our list of the current ineligible repertoire).
Preliminary and Final Round:

There are two rounds for the competition on two separate dates. Preliminary round will be held closed to the public. The final round will be open to the public.

In the preliminary round the participant is expected to play the whole piece, however, due to time limits the judges may stop the participant before the piece finishes or ask the participant to skip to another section of the piece. Please note this doesn't effect the outcome of the competition.

In the final round the participant is expected to play the whole piece.

Participant must play the same piece between both rounds. Participant will be disqualified if they play a different piece for the final round.

Participant must have an accompanist for both rounds of competition. If you need recommendations for an accompanist please contact us.

Music must be memorized for the competition.

Winner of the competition will perform with the Symphony or Symphonic Orchestra at the end of the season.
